EU ETS for aviation: preparing for ICAO’s CORSIA

Brussels, 3rd February 2017

The European Commission proposed today to prolong the current intra-EU scope of the aviation EU ETS.

IACA members expect that the EU will now focus on a smooth transition from the current EU ETS towards the historical agreed ICAO Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) as from the year 2021. In order to avoid that airlines are faced with the burden of 2 schemes, the high level of ambition of CORSIA should replace entirely the EU-ETS for aviation. Furthermore, IACA would like to reiterate that a market-based mechanism is only one out of a basket of measures. The implementation of the long-overdue genuine Single European Sky would indeed bring immediate and significant CO2 reductions.

Sylviane Lust, IACA’s Director General concluded:

“The effects of aviation CO2 emissions are worldwide. We rely on the EU legislators to bring the EU within the global ICAO CORSIA scheme. Airlines should not be burdened with two systems. It would penalize passengers and the EU economy. CORSIA is the right instrument, the right scope and it is agreed. It must replace the aviation EU-ETS.”
