Airlines International Representation in Europe (AIRE) was pleased to attend last week’s policy discussion on “EU ETS revision and scaling e-SAF for competitive aviation”, hosted by MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú and the SASHA Coalition. The event focused on the future of the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the role of e-SAF in supporting the decarbonisation of European aviation.
Bringing together policymakers, airlines, fuel producers, and other industry stakeholders, the discussion provided a timely platform to exchange views on the policy framework that will shape the sector’s future.
Several key themes emerged from the exchange. Participants noted the growing momentum behind measures aimed at scaling up SAF uptake and providing greater certainty for long-term investment. There was also a strong focus on ensuring the effective implementation of ReFuelEU Aviation, while avoiding unnecessary administrative burden for operators.
In addition, increasing attention was given to the upcoming revision of the EU ETS and its interaction with CORSIA, with important implications for airlines operating both within Europe and internationally.
As the EU moves towards the next phase of ETS discussions, ensuring an appropriate balance between environmental ambition and the competitiveness of the aviation sector will remain a central challenge.
