Sustainability in aviation: Vision 2050

AIRE had the chance to participate today in the event organized by the Spanish Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGAC), in collaboration with Airbus. The event was focused on the inputs and commitments needed for the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) to decarbonize the aviation sector, alongside advancements in SAF production technologies. In that sense, the Director of DGAC underscored Spain’s commitment to decarbonizing the aviation industry.

During the event, DG MOVE presented their strategic framework in the EU. The event underscored the significant challenges of decarbonization and the necessity for balanced measures that foster both open market access and sustainable growth. The introduction of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) from non-fossil origins is considered a viable short- to medium-term strategy to reduce the aviation sector’s carbon footprint. However, concerns persist regarding the sufficiency of these measures, which may lead to industry consolidations.

Thus, we must navigate these changes carefully, determining whether they represent natural market adjustments or a genuine decline in market efficacy. By embracing innovation and prioritizing responsible practices, the aviation industry can continue to thrive economically, connecting people, cultures, and economies for a more prosperous future.
