Nadine Braun Amaral represented AIRE at a Brussels Climate Week roundtable on the revision of ReFuelEU Aviation, highlighting the importance of regulatory certainty, effective funding mechanisms and coordinated industry action to accelerate the deployment of eSAF.
As the European Union revisits its sustainable aviation fuel framework, establishing the right regulatory and investment conditions will be essential to accelerating the production and uptake of electro-sustainable aviation fuels (eSAF).
Nadine Braun Amaral represented Airlines International Representation in Europe (AIRE) at the roundtable “Navigating the ReFuelEU Revision: Accelerating eSAF Integration in European Aviation”, held as part of Brussels Climate Week. The discussion brought together stakeholders to examine how Europe can translate its eSAF ambitions into tangible progress and support the development of a competitive, sustainable aviation sector.
Key priorities for accelerating eSAF deployment
The discussion highlighted three priorities for creating the conditions needed to scale up eSAF production in Europe.
- Providing greater regulatory certainty for investors
A stable and predictable regulatory framework is essential to unlocking investment in eSAF production. Greater clarity on future requirements and policy direction can help reduce investment uncertainty, support long-term planning and encourage the development of production capacity.
- Mobilising carbon revenues to support aviation decarbonisation
Reinvesting revenues generated by the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) in aviation decarbonisation can help address the funding gap facing the sector. Targeted financial support can contribute to scaling up production, accelerating technological development and improving the economic viability of sustainable aviation fuels.
- Strengthening collective action to increase production capacity
Cooperation between industry stakeholders and policymakers will be crucial to accelerating eSAF deployment. Broader participation in initiatives such as the Early Movers Coalition can help mobilise demand, encourage investment and support the expansion of production capacity, contributing to lower costs over time.
From ambition to implementation
Europe’s eSAF ambitions will only translate into meaningful progress if they are matched by the regulatory clarity, financing mechanisms and coordinated action required to bring production to scale.
For AIRE, creating the right conditions for investment and deployment is essential to advancing aviation decarbonisation while preserving the sector’s competitiveness. As discussions on the revision of ReFuelEU Aviation progress, ensuring that the policy framework is both ambitious and workable will be critical to delivering the sustainable aviation fuels that European airlines need for their transition.
