Step forward towards legal clarity in the field

of air passenger rights

Brussels, 10th June 2016

The International Air Carrier Association (IACA) welcomes the publication today of the European Commission’s interpretative Guidelines on EU Regulation 261/2004.

IACA considers that this initiative is the right step towards legal clarity for both airlines and passengers, awaiting the adoption of a balanced new legislation by the European institutions.

IACA hopes that today’s guidance will end the confusion created by court cases which have in fact led to unnecessary tensions between airlines and their passengers.

IACA’s Director General, Sylviane Lust, said: “The interpretative guidelines indeed fill a gap. As the European Commission has included all stakeholders in the process, the text will improve legal certainty and consistency in the implementation of the passenger rights rules. As such, we call upon all interested parties to make full use of this helpful guidance.”
